Institutional Update 2011-12

Each year, the Commission requires each member institution to provide an update on organizational health through the Institutional Update (formerly the AIDU).  The 2011-2012 Institutional Update closed on April 13, 2012.

Completion of the Institutional Update is a requirement of affiliation with the Commission.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Commission has compiled a list of answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the Institutional Update.

New to the Institutional Update

Some of the reportable data for the 2012 Institutional Update may have consequences for an institution’s financial aid eligibility. In addition, the Commission’s dues as well as some of its evaluation processes are based on the information an institution provides on the Institutional Update.

Please read all instructions carefully so that there is a clear understanding of the instructions and definitions for each section as well as their implications for the accrediting relationship. If you continue to have questions, contact Joan Mitchanis at jmitchanis@hlcommission.org.

Distance or Correspondence Education

Institutions must properly distinguish its distance and correspondence education using the federal definitions.  The key distinction in the federal definition is whether the courses are self-paced and the interaction with faculty is student-initiated. Courses of this nature are correspondence education regardless of whether they are delivered electronically or through any other mechanism. The U.S. Department of Education has informed the Commission that it is looking closely at whether institutions have properly made this identification and whether the Commission has reviewed the identification and that there may be Title IV consequences for institutions that have not properly made this identification.

Default Rates

This year’s Institutional Update asks institutions to identify their new three-year default rate. The Commission will be monitoring these data along with other information provided in the Institutional Update. Information about this rate was recently sent to every institution from the U.S. Department of Education.

Other Changes to the Institutional Update

Additional changes in the 2011-2012 Institutional Update include collection of information on:

  • the state of incorporation and ownership of the institution.
  • certificates awarded by the institution.
  • clock-hour programs and student loan default rates as part of the Federal Compliance Section.

How the Commission Uses the Information Reported on the Institutional Update

Information provided in the Institutional Update serves multiple purposes.

  • Some information is used to update the Organizational Profile that is posted on the Commission’s Web site.
  • Certain financial and non-financial indicators of organizational health are reviewed to determine whether there are any trends that suggest Commission follow up.
  • Some changes may require review through the Commission’s policies and procedures on institutional change.
  • Some information is collected and monitored in compliance with Federal requirements.
  • Student enrollment data are used to calculate membership dues.
